Moving or Adding a New Clinic?
On 27th June, 2024 Emeritus Professor Stephen P Myers passed away in Lismore Base Hospital. Rest in peace after a life well-lived.
I first met Stephen when we we were both lecturing at the NSW College of Natural Therapies in Sydney, Stephen in the Department of Naturopathy and myself in the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We later became Deans of these respective faculties, or as Stephen, with his typical humour, referred to us as the “Co-Deans”.
Stephen studied Medicine at the University of Newcastle and subsequently completed his PhD in Pharmacology, investigating the anti-coagulant effects of garlic extract.
Stephen became Head of the School of Natural and Complementary Medicine at Southern Cross University between 1995 and 2001, where he also founded Australia’s first Research Centre for Naturopathic and Complementary Medicine. Stephen was also an Adjunct Professor and researcher at the National Institute for Complementary Medicine (NICM).
Stephen was an untiring advocate for Complementary Medicine, sitting on numerous government and World Health Organisation committees, and also engaging in very well-informed articulate debate with some of Complementary Medicine’s critics.
What members of the Chinese Medicine community will probably remember Stephen for principally was the landmark report he co-authored with Alan Bensoussan, “Towards a Safer Choice: The Practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Australia”. This report, commissioned by the Victorian Department of Human Services, The New South Wales Department of Health and the Queensland Department of Health, was a very significant milestone along the path to registration of Chinese Medicine in Victoria, and subsequently national registration.
While Stephen will be greatly missed by friends, family and colleagues, Stephens’ legacy to Complementary and Integrative Medicine will continue to resonate for many years to come.
Dr John McDonald, PhD.
A series of changes to the National Law came into effect on July 1st including new powers to prevent unregistered practitioners from treating patients and making it possible for a practitioner’s alternative name to be listed on the register alongside their legal name.
The new changes complete a series of reforms to the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law agreed by all health ministers aimed at strengthening public protection and improving the operation of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
You can read more about the new changes in the attached media release, as well as find information about all the changes over the past two years at the National Law Amendments page.
The Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (the Board) has today sent invitations to all registered Chinese medicine practitioners and students inviting them to attend a webinar held by the Board Chair and members of the Regulatory Experience and Engagement team and Notifications, Ahpra on Thursday 18 July 2024 at 6pm AEST. The Board extends this invitation to stakeholders and professional associations.
The Board asks you to encourage your registered Chinese medicine practitioner members to attend this webinar, particularly as it provides an opportunity for practitioners to meet the Board Chair, Regulatory Experience and Engagement team and Notifications team to talk about what Ahpra’s Expert Advisory Group found out about practitioner distress during the notification process, and some ways that we are responding.
Practitioners who register and who log in to the webinar can count the webinar as CPD and should include and document their reflections and connected learning goals in their CPD portfolio.
CPD certificates will be issued to practitioners who log in and remain logged into the entire webinar.
Date: Thursday 18 July 2024
Venue: via Zoom webinar
Time: 6.00pm – 7.00pm AEST
