Happy New Year to All Our Members!

Hoping 2025 is a successful year professionally and personally.

It is very pleasing to report that, AACMA has now achieved the highest membership numbers in its 52 years as the lead association representing Chinese medicine practitioners and the profession.

Thank you to all our members for trusting us to represent you and we welcome all our new practitioner members and student members.

Congratulations to our new graduate student members who have now joined us as practitioner members.

AACMA is here to support you in every way to achieve a successful career in Chinese medicine.

Tzu Chi Foundation

A Buddhist Compassion and Relief Foundation founded by Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Taiwan in 1966 is a global charitable foundation that delivers free or low cost health care to the needy, refugees and homeless.

Each year Tzu Chi has a forum and this year Brisbane hosts this global event. It’s a 3 day event with Chinese Medicine sessions on the afternoon of first day and a variety of dentistry sessions covering the majority of the program on the other days. Brisbane dentists have been providing low cost or free dental care in Brisbane for several years through the Tzu Chi Foundation which is why the conference program has more presentations for dental practitioners.

Speakers from around the world will be presenting and AACMA members will be given a discounted registration for the event.

Event Highlights:

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Participants can earn up to 16 CPD hours through comprehensive scientific sessions and an additional 4 CPD hours via essential non-scientific professional development.

  • Expert Sessions: Engage with international experts in public health, medical care, and humanitarian relief through interactive workshops, hands-on training, and dynamic panel discussions.

  • Key Discussions: Topics include breaking the cycle of health inequality, promoting health equity for vulnerable populations, and integrating traditional Chinese and modern medicine.

Notable Speakers:

  • Dr. Chin Lon Lin, CEO of Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, Taiwan.

  • Ms. Fiona Hinchliffe, Executive Director, Health Integration & Community Services, Mater Health.

  • Ms. Karyn Walsh, CEO of Micah Projects.

  • Ms. Brooke Hutchison, Manager of Metro South Health’s Health Equity & Access Team (HEAT).

Tzu Chi has a centre in Salisbury, Brisbane where multimodality treatments are delivered.

AACMA members can join this foundation and Brisbane based practitioners will be able to volunteer at the centre to provide acupuncture treatments.

For many of our members, this may provide an opportunity to give back.

This is a developing collaboration between Tzu Chi Foundation and AACMA with the future potential for AACMA practitioner members to be able work in the Tzu Chi Buddhist hospitals in Taiwan and Canada.

Health and Allied Health practitioners detained while trying to perform their jobs.

There is a global movement of health practitioners who are lobbying for the release of health workers who have been caught up in areas of conflict while doing their jobs providing medical aid.

These health workers have faced the dreadful choice of balancing their own survival with remaining to take care of the ill and injured. With massive destruction of infrastructure and very little medical supplies, these health workers continue to provide the best care they can within a devastated healthcare system.

Many practitioners have been killed and others detained while trying to provide whatever care they can for their patients.

AACMA is an apolitical association that is standing up for our health practitioner colleagues around the world and urge the Australian Government to intervene to gain their release. Medical neutrality should be enforced in any war zone.

NDIS Update from the CMBA

AACMA received a letter from CMBA Chair Dr Danforn Lim about his meeting with the NDIA regarding the NDIS legislative changes that came into effect in October  2024.

Defence Health’s Notice for Remedial Providers

Defence Health will be conducting a peer behavioural analysis of their remedial providers over the next twelve months, commencing on 1 January 2025.

The decision to undertake this analysis stems from patterns observed in claims data, including instances of:

  1. Billing for multiple initial consultations per patient, which attract higher charges and benefits.

  2. Using HICAPS cards to claim for multiple individuals on the same policy in a manner that may inadvertently provide a single patient with a higher benefit and reduced out-of-pocket costs.

Defence Health sees it as an opportunity to learn more about the providers and acknowledge that each practice is different, so any findings will be met with sincere enquiry.
